It’s hard to believe that on one of America’s most sacred holidays that churches would have to close their doors and celebrate in solitude. Yes that is true, on Super Bowl Sunday, our favorite beer drinking, man worshipping day of the year, poor pastors everywhere would once again be forced to allow free admission to their Super Bowl bashes or face legal repercussions. This has been a hot topic for churches for several years now, and many churches have decided that it is safer to just close their doors and hold private parties rather than the church celebrating this event as a whole.

I hope you can sense my sarcasm and I also hope that you can see how ridiculous this predicament is to the local church. How foolish for pastor’s to close their churches and choose to worship a sport rather than their savior. I know that those words may seem a little harsh, but isn’t Sunday the Lords day? Aren’t we supposed to worship him on that day? Last time I checked were commanded not to forsake the assembling of believers.

Hebrews 10:23-25 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

We know that it is wrong to worship idols, but many times I don’t think we realize what an Idol is. According to Noah Webster, an idol is “Any thing on which we set our affections; that to which we indulge an excessive and sinful attachment.” Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” As Christians, we are commanded to have no other gods before the one true God, and the Super Bowl is no exception.

Our economy is failing, our country is turning farther and farther from God, our leaders deny our Christian heritage, our schools teach lies about our American history. Millions of people are without hope while the church is committing whoredom with the pagan celebration of the day. We wonder why revival doesn’t happen in America. I believe it needs to start in the Church; Christians need to wake up and realize that Christ could come at any moment. If Christ was to return on Super Bowl Sunday, would he find you faithfully serving him or skipping church to watch the Super Bowl?
